Q:
Can a GPS Tracking System be completely hidden from view?
A:
Yes, it can in most cases. However, there are a few points to keep in mind.
Most GPS antennas are designed to be mounted internally in the vehicle typically adhered to the inside of the windshield. Many GPS equipment manufacturers will regularly install these types of antennas under a vehicle’s dash. This will work fine most of the time, but it allows two problems to occur: First, if an antenna is mounted under a dash, it allows for items to be placed on top of the dash essentially in-between the antenna and the GPS satellites in orbit, whether intentionally or inadvertently. This can cause the GPS signal to be blocked, resulting in “holes in the data” or missed location plots in the vehicle’s travels. Secondly, having the antenna mounted under the dash can prevent the antennas from having as wide of a “field of view” as is required to obtain an optimal fix, which can also result in holes in the data. While these holes are normally minimal, they can occur at the most inopportune times and should always be considered when deciding on antenna placement. In most cases we are able to work around these limitations.
In addition, there are a few vehicles which contain a higher than normal metallic content in their windshields. In these vehicles - typically minivans with larger than normal windshields such as the Pontiac Montana and Chevrolet Venture plus many luxury vehicles - the antenna must be positioned in such a way as to be able to see past this limitation. In a few rare examples, this must be accomplished with an externally mounted antenna. If you have ever dealt with a Toll Tag that didn’t work inside of your vehicle and it was necessary to obtain a front license plate bracket mounted toll tag, you will be familiar with this issue. |

We specialize in GPS Fleet Tracking Equipment Installation and Service – It’s all we do! We have extensive experience working in this field and have dealt with just about every type of business, vehicle, and driver behavior. The MME crew maintained a fleet of over 48,000 installed vehicles for over 5 years. We have seen it all! This experience provides us an insight into how fleet vehicles are used and how drivers have used “urban legends” to attempt to defeat GPS tracking systems in the past. As such we have many “tricks of the trade” that we have developed over the years to allow us to know when a driver is attempting to tamper with a system.
In addition, we solder all connections and utilize redundant grounding systems to avoid premature failure or intermittent operation of equipment due to road vibration. We refuse to use T-taps, Scotch-Loks, fuse-circuit taps, and butt connectors – quite simply, they will fail and many times are installed in an un-safe or dangerous manner. We custom fit our power harnesses to the individual vehicles and carefully secure all wiring to prevent possible entanglement. Finally, we have installed equipment in over a hundred thousand vehicles so we have the expertise to know what works and what doesn’t work in multiple vehicle and equipment types. |

Do you sell GPS tracking solutions? How can I get tracking for my own fleet?

We work with several GPS companies but we do not automatically recommend one over the other. If you would like a recommendation, please email us with the type of fleet you have and any particular issues you would like to monitor. We would be more than happy to work with you to find a solution that will meet your requirements.
